The very first Arbor Day took place in Nebraska City, and now it’s recognized as a civil holiday in the state of Nebraska. That means a whole bunch of Nebraskans get the last Friday of April off work every year! Raise your hand if you wish you lived in Nebraska.

Arbor Day is a really important holiday to the Boogie Board team here in Kent, Ohio. On this day every year, people all over the world are encouraged to plant or care for trees. We try to care for trees year all year ’round by encouraging people to replace paper with Boogie Board LCD eWriters – and that’s why we’re giving away five limited edition customized Arbor Day Boogie Board LCD eWriters! One Boogie Board LCD eWriter can save over 50,000 sheets of paper. I’m not very good at math, but that’s A LOT of trees.

Have you met the Boogie Board Sync 9.7 LCD eWriter yet? No? Allow me to introduce you.

The Improv Electronics team unveiled the new Boogie Board Sync 9.7 LCD eWriter at International CES in January and it created quite the buzz.

Isn’t it pretty?

The Boogie Board Sync 9.7 units used for demos and reviews at the show, however, were just early-stage prototypes. We’re working hard here at Improv Electronics to finalize the design elements and other details before the product officially launches late this year (Q4 2013), and we want you to join us as we take the final steps toward completion.

Every week we’ll be publishing a Weekly Sync Update detailing a different element of the Boogie Board Sync 9.7 launch process. Below you’ll find our very first installment with Billy Chapnick, Improv Electronics Director of Marketing. Stop by again next week for another close look at the Boogie Board Sync 9.7!

The latest model to join the growing line of tree-friendly paper replacements is on store shelves now – just in time for the holidays. The highly anticipated Boogie Board Jot LCD eWriter is available for purchase from 1,100 Bed Bath & Beyond locations in the U.S. for $39.99. It can also be purchased on the Bed Bath & Beyond website.

The sleek new eWriter is similar to the original in functionality, but features a number of exciting new enhancements:

a modern, professional look with red, blue or graphite accents
tapered stylus that doubles as a kick-stand for horizontal viewing
integrated magnets – mount it on your refrigerator, filing cabinet or any metallic surface!
replaceable coin cell battery that provides up to 50,000 erases
erase lock switch to prevent accidental erasure

Accessories (available soon) were also designed with a focus on aesthetics and style. The Jot Jacket is a snug-fitting neoprene sleeve that protects the Boogie Board Jot eWriter from impact, weather and unwanted screen marks. The Jot Folio has a solid, polyurethane construction and a convenient flip-over design that mimics traditional stenographer notepads.

We received a number of really wonderful, spooky and creative Halloween drawings (nobody used paper! Bonus points have been awarded to each of you for your eco-friendliness and ability to follow directions) for our contest. To make things a little bit easier for everyone, we decided to put only the top five drawings to a vote. All five submissions posted here are already winners and will receive a customized limited edition Spells & Potions Boogie Board LCD eWriter, but the grand prize winner will also receive a $100 gift certificate to Malley’s Chocolates. This is where you come in.

All of the submissions are up on our Facebook page, but if you do not use Facebook and you still want to vote, leave a comment here telling us which Halloween design is your favorite. The one with the most votes here and on Facebook by Saturday, October 27 will receive a $100 gift certificate to Malley’s Chocolates!

Kasey, Kayla and Karen from Honolulu used food coloring to dye this bottle orange and then covered the outside with fun Halloween drawings using a black Sharpie marker.

Kartikay in Michigan drew this Halloween setting using a computer mouse and Microsoft Paint.

Hannah and Nemo in Texas created this spooky disguise with paint-pen markers and a ceramic mask.

This cute little pumpkin was drawn on a Boogie Board LCD eWriter by Kamma.

Shannon from Florida designed this adorable witch costume using only icing and other cupcake toppings!

Halloween is nearly upon us, and you know what that means: trick or treating, costumes, black cats, corn mazes, and (last but certainly not least) a ton of delicious, sugary candy. In honor of All Hallow’s Eve, we’re giving away a Limited Edition Customized Spells & Potions Boogie Board LCD eWriter and a $100 gift certificate to Malley’s Chocolates. Did you catch that? You have a chance to win so much delicious candy!

Here’s how it works: draw a Halloween-themed picture (a pumpkin, a costume, some candy – anything you want!), snap a photo and e-mail the photo to kerickson@kentdisplays.com. Creativity and weirdness will be rewarded! The folks here at Improv Electronics will pick our top 20 favorite entries and publish them on our Facebook page. The drawing that receives the most Facebook ‘likes’ after a week will be the grand prize winner, and the top five will receive a free Limited Edition Customized Spells & Potions Boogie Board LCD eWriter!

Sounds pretty simple, right? There’s one teeny tiny catch: you cannot use paper. You can use anything else you want, though, like sidewalk chalk, for example, or an Etch-A-Sketch, or hey! Why not use a Boogie Board LCD eWriter? You could even upload your design to Evernote and share it with the Evernote online community.

Before you begin, here are a few rules to follow:

Drawings done on paper will not be accepted. Say goodbye to paper, be good to the environment and find something else to use as a drawing medium. Witches and wizards are eco-friendly, too!
Kent Displays employees, family members of employees, partners and/or other affiliates are not eligible to participate in the contest.
Entries must be hand-drawn. Digital illustrations (i.e., using image editing software like Adobe Photoshop) will not be accepted.
Only one drawing can be submitted per person.
The contest is restricted to residents of the continental United States only.

The team here at Improv Electronics always makes having fun a priority, and we had an absolute blast filming this video titled ‘The Pacifier’. And because we’re always looking for ways to make you happy, we decided to turn this little film into a contest! Late last year, Improv Electronics launched the Boogie Board Rip eWriter — the first Boogie Board eWriter model with save capabilities — and in conjunction with that launch, developed and released accompanying software called the Virtual Desktop Companion (VDC).

Yesterday at the ISTE 2012 conference & exhibition in San Diego, California, Improv Electronics announced an exciting VDC software upgrade that will be available free from improvelectronics.com this fall!

The new VDC 2.0 includes:

integration with Evernote, a highly popular file management and note-taking software
virtual whiteboard mode, which displays the Boogie Board eWriter’s writing surface in real-time onto a PC monitor or projector, making it a very effective group communication or presentation tool
compatibility with MyScript OCR technology, which will convert handwritten notes saved on the Boogie Board Rip eWriter to typewritten text

So how can YOU use the Boogie Board Rip eWriter and VDC 2.0?

1. You can take page after page of notes in the classroom, in a business meeting, or at a conference. Or maybe you are practicing a new sketching technique! Either way, writing on the Boogie Board Rip eWriter’s surface feels just like using pencil and paper, and you can save each page for later editing, reviewing, organizing or sharing.

2. You can connect the Boogie Board Rip eWriter directly to your computer and project what you are drawing or writing in real time up onto your monitor – the entire screen transforms into a digital whiteboard! Perfect for brainstorming with your colleagues, sharing ideas and collaborating with other students. Writing/drawing is black on a white background, just like most whiteboards.

3. You can store, save, manage and tag your files within the Evernote cloud and access them from any other device you have synced with Evernote (for example, your smart phone!).

Make your notes easier to read, easier to search, and easier to edit with any word processing software. Maybe I wrote this entire blog post on my Boogie Board Rip eWriter and converted it to text – it’s totally possible with the new VDC 2.0 upgrade! Starting this fall, all Boogie Board Rip eWriter units will ship with a 30-day free trial of MyScript software.
